Welcome to my page!

Standing 277 meters above sea level, Lycabettus Hill (sometimes spelt Lykavitos) is the highest point of Athens. Although a beautiful walk up via a circular path, it will be a test of endurance and a challenge in summer.

Lycabettus cable car can take you to the top of the hill, which proves to be a novelty for younger kids. The downside is it’s a closed tunnel, so there is no view on the way up.

The view from Mount lycabettus is best enjoyed at sunset whilst waiting for the lights of the Acropolis, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Panathenaic Stadium and Ancient Agora to come on. You will also be reminded that Athens is surrounded by sea with spectacular views across the Aegean.

At the top of the Athens Lycabettus you will find a Greek church, an open-air amphitheatre used predominantly in the warmer months, the restaurant Orizontes with spectacular views across Athens and a cafe which opens for breakfast and lunch.

If you decide to take a taxi, it can only take you so far up the hill. You will need to walk up a significant amount of stairs for the remainder of the way.

Getting there: We recommend you get a taxi to Lycabettus theater St in Kolonaki, a short ride from the centre and decide whether to walk or take the funicular. The path starts at the end of Aristippou Street and winds upwards. The funicular leaves from the corner of Ploutarhiou and Aristippou Streets every 30 minutes.

According to mythology, Mount Lycabettus was a rock carried by the goddess Athena that slipped from her hand when a crow gave her a message of bad news. Others believe that the name of the mountain comes from the word for wolf, as herds of wolves used to live there…No matter which story you choose to believe, one thing is certain: it is definitely worth paying a visit to this place.

The most relaxing way to ascend is by the cable car located at the end of Ploutarchou and Aristippou street. The cable car journey only lasts 13 minutes and takes you to the top of the hill. From there, you can enjoy the endless view of Athens as far as the port of Piraeus.

The best time to visit Mount Lycabettus is during the afternoon. If you stay for the sunset, this place will certainly enchant you.

In between the blocks of flats, you can distinguish Acropolis, Herodion and Kallimarmaro (where the modern Olympic Games were born). For those eager to see more, there is also a telescope that guarantees a view as far the island of Aigina, if weather conditions permit.

The hill has a large open-air amphitheatre at the top, which has housed many Greek and international concerts. Among the artists who have performed at the Lycabettus theatre included Ray Charles, Joan Baez, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, James Brown, Bob Dylan, Paco De Lucia, Al Di Meola, John Mc Laughlin, Gary Moore, Peter Gabriel, Black Sabbath, Nick Cave, Pet Shop Boys, Deep Purple, UB40, Placebo, Morrissey, Radiohead, Moby, Massive Attack, Faithless, Whitesnake, Tracy Chapman, Nightwish, Slipknot, Patti Smith, Vanessa Mae, Brian Ferry, Tito Puente, Buena Vista Social Club, Orishas and Scorpions.
